Consumer Valuation of and Attitudes towards Novel Foods Produced with New Plant Engineering Techniques: A Review

We follow the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews to review emerging international body of empirical evidence on consumers’ attitudes and willingness pay (WTP) novel foods produced with New Plant Engineering Techniques (NPETs). NPETs include genome/gene editing, cisgenesis, intragenesis, RNA interference. These are often beneficial environment human health more sustainable under increasingly prevalent climate extremes. techniques can also improve animal welfare disease resistance when applied animals. Despite these abilities NPETs, suggests that many, but not all, consumers discount relative conventional ones. Our sorts out findings identify conditioning factors increase acceptance WTP in a significant segment consumers. International patterns identified. analyze how information knowledge interact consumer technologies. Heterogeneity consumers—across cultures borders towards science innovation—emerges as key determinant WTP. Acceptance tend socially attributes—as opposed producer-oriented cost-saving attributes—are generated by NPETs. NPET-improved systematically less discounted than transgenic foods. Most valuation estimates based hypothetical experiments surveys await validation through revealed preferences actual purchases food retailing environments.
